The
Light Shines in the Darkness
1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2
He was in the beginning with God. 3
All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was
made. 4
In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. 5
And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
John 1:1-5 NKJV
I
want to focus briefly on verse 5: And the Light shines in the darkness, and
the darkness did not comprehend it.
The
word “comprehend” in the original text is a compound word, kata-lambano; lambano
meaning to seize, to take hold of; and, kata, according to, or
against. Basically it means in this sense the darkness had no ability to
overtake the Light. The darkness was unable to seize the Light with
understanding and comprehension. The Light being greater in Power and Dominion
left the darkness void of any understanding whatsoever.
With
the “Greek” out of the way let us put this into a little perspective. The
unsaved are lost in darkness. They simply do not have the capacity to understand
the things regarding the Light of the Spirit. To the lost world, without Christ,
they do not have the ability to make sense of the things of the Spirit.
But
the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are
foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually
discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14
Often
it seems as though the darkness is winning over the Light. Looking at the
world system of politics, religion, and economics, it would appear in the
natural that things are getting worse. And they are! However, I want to apply
this into the time frames of the Holy Spirit. What would seemingly appear,
as imminent victory for the enemy is really nothing more than a “set up” by
the Lord of Hosts to render ultimate defeat to the kingdom of darkness.
For
example Genesis says regarding the creation of the heavens and the earth:
The
earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep- Genesis
1:2
Darkness
had the upper hand so to speak. Darkness was in control. Darkness controlled the
elements and the atmosphere…darkness was winning. But then something
happened.
And
the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Genesis
1:2
In
the very place where darkness was in control, the Spirit of God was waiting,
hovering, and anticipating the Word from the Lord. And then the Lord spoke:
Then
God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.
And God saw the light that it was good; and God divided the light from
the darkness. Genesis 1:3-4
Everything
changed when God’s Presence was released. Darkness ran and hid. Darkness did
not overtake the Light. It did not comprehend it!
If
I walk into my bedroom at night and flip the light switch to “on” – there
is never an argument with darkness as to whether it should flee or not. There
isn’t a battle, or an ensuing war that takes place between the “power
switch” and the dispersement of the darkness. It is quite simple. Light wins.
Not sometimes or even occasionally, Light wins all the time.
It
only appears that darkness is winning. And that only for a season.
In
an interesting fulfillment of prophecy the Bible records in Luke 23:44 that as
Jesus was hanging on the cross it would appear that darkness had won.
Now
it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the
ninth hour. Luke 23:44
Matthew
wrote that darkness was over all the land – Matthew 27:25, but, Luke records
that it was over all the earth. What appeared to the world was the Light
of men was being extinguished as the Life of the one on the center cross was
ebbing away.
Amos
spoke by the Spirit hundreds of year prior to this day:
"And
it shall come to pass in that day," says the Lord God, "That I will
make the sun go down at noon, And I will darken the earth in broad daylight; I
will turn your feasts into mourning, And all your songs into lamentation; I will
bring sackcloth on every waist, And baldness on every head; I will make it like
mourning for an only son, And its end like a bitter day.”
Amos 8:9-10
For
those who surveyed the cross that day it ended in bitter disappointment. It
appeared their Victor had become the victim of the political and religious
system of the times. Yes, for those who had believed, it surely seemed darkness
had won.
But
just as it happened in the beginning the Voice that spoke then, spoke again:
I
am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I
have the keys of Hades and of Death. Revelation
1:18
Darkness
lost. Light won.
It
is written for our example and our encouragement. This may sound strange to you;
nevertheless, it is supposed to look dark now. Just as in Jesus day, the
world system, both political and religious, is failing. The economies of many
nations of the world are in debt beyond their ability pay. America is no
exception.
What
purpose does this serve? Simply that it might appear that darkness is
prevailing and on the verge of winning. However, it is nothing more than God
Almighty setting the stage for His Light to shine in the darkness. When Egypt
was plunged into a darkness so deep it could be felt, there was light in the
land of Goshen! The chosen people of God experienced the Light of the life of
men while the rest was being judged by the darkness. (Exodus 10:21-23)
As
it was then so it shall be again. The true sons of God are trimming their wicks.
They are making sure their lamps are full of oil. For just when the lights go
out on the world they shall burn brighter than ever. The Light always shines in
the darkness. Therefore encourage one another with these words:
Arise,
shine; For your Light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep
darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, And His glory will be
seen upon you. The Gentiles shall
come to your Light, And kings to the brightness of your rising. Isaiah
60:1-3
Everything
is about to change.
My
love and embrace,
Eddie
